Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about setup, scanning, PIN recovery and the data stored by CodesWallet.
How do I unlock my watch if I forgot my PIN?
Open the Garmin Connect IQ app on your phone, then go to My Device > My Apps > CodesWallet > Settings. You can view or change your CodesWallet PIN there. Set it to 0000 if you want to disable PIN protection.
How can I erase all my data?
On your watch, open CodesWallet, hold the bottom right button (beside the three dots) to open Settings, then choose Delete Data. Confirm both warning screens to erase every saved code and reset the app settings to their defaults.
Can I recover deleted data?
No. CodesWallet cannot recover an item after it is deleted, and it cannot restore data after Delete Data is confirmed.
Can I keep plain text, like a passport number or a password?
Yes. Every item opens on a text page showing its label and content as large text, and in the item's Formats menu you can turn every barcode format off and keep only Text. That makes CodesWallet a place for the details you need handy but never scan: passport and ID numbers, membership and account numbers, Wi-Fi passwords, locker or gate codes. Everything stays on the watch. For sensitive text, turn on PIN Lock; it deters casual access but does not encrypt the stored content, so keep truly secret material out of any watch app.
How many codes can I save?
You can configure up to 32 code items. Each item can have a label, content, group, Favorite status and its own enabled formats. We chose 32 because it should be more than enough for most people. If you need more, please let us know—we can consider releasing a future version with additional slots.
Do I need my phone or an internet connection?
No phone or internet connection is required to open and display codes already saved on your watch. A paired phone is optional for changing CodesWallet settings or using Garmin Connect Instant Keyboard on compatible watches.
How do I add a code?
Open CodesWallet on your watch, select + New, enter a short label and the exact code content, then choose the formats you want to use. See Getting Started for the complete walkthrough.
Which QR and barcode formats are supported?
CodesWallet supports 15 formats, including QR Code, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417, UPC, EAN, Code 128 and other linear barcodes. See Supported Formats for the complete list.
Which languages does CodesWallet support?
English and German. CodesWallet follows your watch’s language: on a watch set to German, every menu, message and phone setting appears in German; any other language shows English. Your codes, labels and groups stay exactly as they are when you change the watch language, and built-in group names are shown in the watch’s language. More languages are planned.
What should I do if a code will not scan?
Hold the watch steady and square to the reader, reduce glare, and move it slowly closer or farther away. Check that the stored content matches the original exactly, including leading zeroes, and try another compatible format. See Reliable Scanning for more tips.
Where are my codes stored?
Your labels, code values, groups, Favorites and settings are stored locally as app properties on your Garmin watch. The CodesWallet watch app has no network permission and does not send this data to the developer.
Does the PIN encrypt my saved codes?
No. PIN Lock deters casual access but does not encrypt the saved code content. Avoid storing passwords, financial secrets or credentials whose issuer prohibits copying.
Can I back up and restore my codes?
CodesWallet has no backup button yet, but you can copy its data files with a computer. The copy is a full backup for restoring onto the same watch; the files cannot be opened or edited.
- Connect the watch to your computer with its USB cable and open it in File Explorer (on a Mac, use an MTP file tool such as OpenMTP or Android File Transfer).
- Open GARMIN > APPS and find the CodesWallet .PRG file; note its name.
- Copy the file with that name from GARMIN > APPS > SETTINGS (.SET, your codes) and the files with that name from GARMIN > APPS > DATA (.DAT, .IDX and any .IMT: format choices and recent use) to your computer.
- To restore, close CodesWallet on the watch and copy the files back to the same folders, replacing the ones there.
A restore only works for CodesWallet on a watch of the same model, and if the app was reinstalled under a new .PRG name, rename the copies to match. Keep an independent copy of important values too: deleting the app, resetting its data or replacing the watch removes the codes stored on it.
